Client scans run randomly or continuously

Situation:

Scheduled scans, virus sweeps, or administrator scans run and are logged continuously, although no scans are scheduled to run.

Solution:
If this problem occurs immediately after installing a new managed client, read the document Virus Sweep scan begins immediately after installing a new client.

Incorrect values in the registry and corrupted log files are the most common cause of this problem.

CustomTasks registry key
There may be entries remaining in the Windows registry from an earlier task. Remove these entries to resolve the problem.

To remove CustomTasks

  1. Edit the Windows registry on the client, and navigate to the following key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\INTEL\LANDesk\VirusProtect6\CurrentVersion\CustomTasks

     
  2. Delete all values in the CustomTasks key.


Corrupted log files
Corruption in the logs can cause the antivirus program to run scans repeatedly, in an attempt to finish an apparently unfinished task. To resolve the problem, stop the Symantec AntiVirus service and delete the log files from that client. The default locations are:
